Authentic!
As a novice on the first of his meanwhile seventeen trips to Cuba, Kristo was eager to draw sketches
of what he saw on the spot. However, he soon realised that for someone
used to conditions in Europe this strategy is doomed to failure. The
intense sun, torrential downpours and strong gusts of wind that bring
clouds of dust turn any attempt at drawing into a nightmare.
He therefore decided to concentrate on photography instead, travelling
exclusively on foot or by bike as he documented life in the streets of
Havana. Many of the photographs taken provided inspiration for his
pictures – and the following are just a small sample of the
rest:
Human:
The people of Cuba.
Russian:
Aircraft, cars, lorries – relics from the socialist sister state.
American:
These cars have been indestructible for more than fifty years.
Varied:
Architecture in a multitude of styles.
Defective:
When nothing works...
Polish:
Kristo's favourite – the Polski Fiat.
On
display: Shop windows and exhibits.
Eternal:
Columbus Cemetery.
